Coach’s Game Analysis:

Weather and Field Conditions:
Sunny, temps in the low to mid 80’s. Comfortable day for a game. Infield was firm, but dusty because of heavy use and lack of rain between games.

Recap:
Game started out fine but became uncomfortable after a player on Life Plans (LP) got drunk and became a little too “chirpy” following a close play at 3B. Another player on LP would later following his verbal lead. Their behavior took some fun out of the game for players on both teams. It is worth noting that the other players on LP were far easier to get along with and were much more polite.

Offense:
Our pitching was little flat, and with a little too much zip, leading to numerous pop-ups. We will need to pitch the ball higher and to deliver he ball with less speed so our team has a better chance at making line-drive base hits.

LP has a good infield unit. Their weakness appears to be left field and right field. If you can try and hit the ball over the infielders, then you’ll have a good chance at scoring runs.

Defense:
They say good playing is contagious. The same can be said about bad playing. The team got off to a bad start to the game by making multiple bad plays. (Over throws, unnecessary throws, throws to incorrect bases, failing to call a ball when in the air.) The team seemed to feed on each other’s bad plays, making matters worse.

The team eventually found its groovy later in the game after talking things over and shuffling players around according to their strengths. In future games, it might make sense to put the best fielders out for the first inning or two to set the tempo. It might also make sense to put a fielder in the infield and outfield (CF) who can direct the other players on the field; it seemed that various errors were occurring because no one was there to help direct the play.

LP’s batters are good at directing the ball around the field. Be sure to keep them honest by having a short fielder in shallow right and left fields respectively. They also have a batter that looks and hits like David Ortiz, except he’s a righty instead of a lefty.

Game Highlights:

Memorable Events:
 - LP SS: After mishandling a Jorge grounder to short, the LP SS recovered the ball and dove towards 2B, tagging the base with glove to force-out Mark V. The base runner ended-up stepping on his glove. (Glove was on the bag.) This play was the second close play at 2B for Mark V. in two games. (3rd)

 - Brain freeze: with runners on 1B and 2B, Matt fields a chopper to SS and tags 3B as the base runner on 2B was caught napping on the play. (3rd)

 - While attempt to catch a chest-high throw by Matt to home plate, Patsy miss-positions her glove by having the outer webbing face downward while covering the top part with her right hand. Instead of catching the ball with glove, the ball struck her right thumb. Her thumb would swell afterwards. She would return to the game after icing her hand. (3rd)

 - After hitting a double, a Life Plan’s fielder punched Chris Bowler. (In the chest, I believe.) I believe the fielder was pretending that he had the ball, but got too carried away.

 - As the 9-6-5 outfield assist play at 3B was forming, (see below under “defense”), Tim C. went to cover 3B. He ended-up standing on the side facing 2B. As the base runner ran to 3B, Matt threw the ball to Tim C. He caught the ball as the runner was a few steps from the bag. Even though Tim C. was standing on the bag, the base runner ran directly into Tim C. who had the ball. Since the throw was a little high, and since Tim C. is taller than the base runner, he had to bring his arms down to tag the runner with the ball. His arms ended-up around the head of the base runner. The base runner fell to the ground on the play. (I think.) No one was hurt.(5th)

 - After the above play, the base runner took post in center field. He was being extremely chirpy and was calling-out Tim C. from the dug-out. The fielder was also drinking from a beer can while standing the outfield. It would appear the player was drunk and wasn’t even aware of it. His teammates would later make fun of him.

 - Another fielder on LP accused Verdasys of taking the scrimmage game “too serious”, even though their team was leading 29-7 at the time… (7th)

Offense:
Matt:1 for 2 (Solo ITP HR) with one run and one RBI.
Ajeet:1 for 1 (2B, SAC) with one run and 2 RBIs.

LP Outfield:tagged out Kevin at 2B trying to stretch a single into a double. (4th)
Verdasys:outfield assist on tag-out at 3B to end 5th. Tim Nolte (RF) to Matt (SS) to Tim C (3B) to tag-out a runner trying to get an extra base on a teammate’s single. (5th)
Verdasys:F5-3 double play. Tim C. catches a pop-fly near 3B, who then throws to Chris B. at 1B to catch runner off base. (6th)
Verdasys:1-2-3 inning (of sorts) in 6th. (3 batters, one hit and a double play.)
LP Catcher:pop-up catch at home. (6th)
LP Catcher:pop-up catch at home. (7th)

Milestones:
 - Début game for: Nancy, Colleen, Jorge, Patsy, Tim C. Was a return game for Ajeet Bhoyar.

Injuries:
 - Gowtham re-aggravated a hamstring injury chasing after a ball in left field. He later collided with A-WOL while chasing down a short pop-up into left field. He did return to the game after resting on the bench and is expect to be ready to go for the next game.
 - Patsy injured her thumb on a throw to home plate. (Details above.) Though her thumb did swell-up, she is expected to participate in the next game.

A-WOL Watch:

Barely broke the sweat during the game. T-shirt was dry after the game; a first.

Offense:
 - 1 for 3. Seemed calmer with bases empty than with runners on-board. Should consider being lead-off hitter or positioned at end of line-up
 - Pop-up to SS. (Blue bat.) Runner on 3B. Hit a pitch that was a bit inside, but low.
 - Line drive into shallow center field. (Black bat.) No runners. Ball was recovered cleanly and quickly.
 - FC. (Black bat.) Runners on corner. Ball hit to SS, who had trouble fielding ball, but recovered to get force-out at 2B.

Defense:
Made no outs, almost had an assist. (Call could have gone either way.) I tried playing left field, but had trouble distinguishing a short hit from a deep hit. Did better in center, where I could command the fielders, and have far fewer “deep” balls to contend with.

Center field:
 - Retrieved a ball that got passed Gowtham in LF.
 - Collided with Gowtham trying to catch a short hit into shall left field. Had a good track of the ball. At the last second, I went low to field ball, but at moment, Gowtham came rushing passed me and collided with my glove, missing the ball. Neither of us called for the ball, which was a mistake.
 - Retrieved a ball that got past short fielder. Runner was held to a single or a double.
 - Retrieved a ball that got past short fielder and left fielder.

Left field:
 - Misjudged a long hit for a short one and had ball pass over my leaping vertical reach. Batter got ITP HR.
 - Fielder a ball hit into shallow left field. Nearly got an assist by tossing ball to Matt (SS) who then passed it to Tim C (3B) who nearly tagged an advancing runner in time. (From my angle, the runner looked out.)
